DAY 48 FLORIDA CITY, FL TO KEY LARGO, FL

28 Miles today   2177 Total miles
A short ride today of only 28 miles but they were difficult to say the least. The wind was unreal – 23 mph with gusts over 30. It was coming from the east and we were riding south so it was a cross wind. We were on the highway from Florida City/Homestead to Key Largo with nothing to shield us from the wind. We walked over 2 miles (took almost an hour) on the road & over a big bridge when we did not feel it was safe to stay on the bikes. When we approached Key Largo we began to ride west and the wind was behind us and it was awesome. We rode faster than we have ridden the whole trip.

We got into the hotel around lunch time and had a great lunch at Mrs. Macs – great place to eat. This is our 3rd time riding from Key Largo to Key West so we have some favorite places we like to eat. We will ride to Marathon tomorrow which is about 50 miles and stay with a good friend of ours, Jerry Wynn, who was kind enough to put us up for the night. We are looking forward to the east wind tomorrow as it is supposed to be a strong as it was today. As long as the wind is at our backs or in our face, we can ride safely. It’s the cross wind you have to watch out for.

I was thinking about you guys yesterday and how the wind was affecting you. Glad that you'll have some better winds today. Will miss you at this weekend's class.
