DAY 23 NAGS HEAD, NC TO AVON, NC

53 Miles today   1045 Total miles
The day started out drizzling and very gloomy. The winds had calmed down which was a good thing. We waited a while to see if the drizzle would stop and things might clear up but it didn't so we took off. Gradually things improved and it turned out to be a good day even though it remained gloomy.

We had our first flat tire today - Jim's bike. We changed it with no problem - we have had plenty experience with them.

We rode from Nags Head, NC to Avon, NC - 53 miles. Much of it was the same scenery, sand dunes and scrub brushes. It was a 2 lane road with a good bike lane except when it was covered in sand or water. The Outer Banks took a beating with the storm. The surf is still raging and the surfers were everywhere. But we had no problem navigating. We rode over a very intimidating bridge at Oregon Inlet with no bike lane but very little traffic. All in all it was a great day despite the weather.

We will be in Ocracoke, NC tomorrow night and will have to ride another ferry to get there. It is a beautiful little island.  We have been there before years ago and really enjoyed it.
