DAY 18 WILLIAMSBURG, VA TO SMITHFIELD, VA

38 Miles today   638 Total miles
Beautiful day today. Left the hotel and rode to the Jamestown Ferry. We met a large group of cyclist from a local club and Bill, a guy riding by himself to Key West too. We were all taking the ferry. Shared stories with each other. After the ferry we continued on by ourselves, riding on great country roads with minor hills. Lots of farms and trees and very few cars. It was a nice ride.

On our way to Smithfield we ran into a couple, Jeff and Marilyn, who were from Orlando and cycling north. They left Labor day and were celebrating being "empty nesters".

When we got into Smithfield, which is the ham capital of the world, we saw lots of meat packing plants and it smelled horrible. We pedaled fast.  Smithfield is a nice little town and we have a great hotel room. We head to Va. Beach tomorrow to see Jim's brother. The weather is iffy, strong head winds are forecast. We are also keeping an eye on Karen and hoping we won't get wet.
